Tesla has reached a significant milestone by producing 50 million 4680 battery cells at its Giga Texas plant in Austin. The company's production capacity for these advanced battery cells has seen substantial growth, supporting the manufacturing of electric vehicles not only at Giga Texas but also at other Tesla factories. Over the past year, Tesla has successfully produced 40 million 4680 cells, averaging nearly one million cells per week.

This achievement follows the last major milestone announced in June 2023, when Tesla reported the production of 10 million 4680 battery cells.

Tesla emphasizes that the 4680 battery cell is a critical component in its strategy to expand electric vehicle production. Despite a modest year-over-year growth in vehicle production expected for 2024, due to what Tesla describes as being "between two waves of growth," the company is poised for significant expansion. This growth will be driven by vehicles based on the next-generation platform, starting with the highly anticipated Tesla Robotaxi, set to be unveiled on August 8 by CEO Elon Musk.

During its Q1 Earnings Call, Tesla highlighted the successful ramp-up of 4680 cell production during the first quarter of the year. Notably, this production increase has outpaced the ramp-up of the Cybertruck, leading to reduced production costs.
